If you are someone who doesn’t have much time to self-tan, this is a good, easy option for you, but I would personally suggest using a mousse if possible, as this gives you the cleanest, most natural finish of all. There are pros and cons to the bronzing water, and I’ll talk about my experiences later.

- The main difficulty when applying this self-tanner is that it’s clear, so keep this in mind and remember that it will have more colour once it’s developed. One thing to make sure of when using this product is that you have applied it to your entire face. If you only spray it on one portion of your face you will definitely end up with an uneven colour.
If you want to start using the Purity face mist, here’s what to do:
- Follow these steps in the morning for best results. This means your tan will develop throughout the day and is less likely to get smudged in your pillows when you move around at night.
- Start by washing your face thoroughly to remove any excess dirt or oil which may be on the surface of the skin. Washing your face beforehand ensures a ‘blank canvas’ which won’t interfere with your tan.
- Apply your serums and moisturisers first. This means that these products can really penetrate into the skin to work effectively without the barrier of the self-tanner in the way. If you have oily skin, you may even find that you don’t need a moisturiser as the tanning mist does have hydrating properties, but it’s up to you.
- Spritz the face mist over your face, making sure to cover all areas and try your best to do so evenly – don’t spray loads on your nose and none on your cheeks. Don’t hold the bottle too close to the face, just close enough that the product reaches the skin.
- Wait for the self-tanner to dry. This won’t take very long, but you want to make sure your face isn’t sticky or tacky as anything you add on top could smudge the tan.
- Apply SPF and any makeup on top – it’s important that you still use SPF because your new tan won’t protect you from the sun any more than before. Not using an SPF s a big mistake which many people make, so you should still use it, even in the winter or if you’re staying indoors.

What’s my experience with these products?
Everyone has different experiences with different products, and you eventually find what works best for you. I have used both of these products before, and I was a little disappointed with the results.
Firstly, as I mentioned before, this self-tanner is more difficult to apply evenly, as you can’t see exactly where you have sprayed it very well. This can lead to streakiness before you’ve even started, and you can only see this once the colour has developed – too late.
You can use an applicator mitt for the gel formula, which can give you a little more control, but the face spray is designed to be a quick spritz for under your makeup, which means you’re relying on how evenly you have sprayed your face without seeing any colour.

Unfortunately, I also found these self-tanners didn’t stay on for as long, and some streakiness did occur in places where I had sweat more than others. For the premium price point and brand reputation, I was a little disappointed by the performance.
For these reasons, I prefer to stick with a self-tanning mousse as I can get the perfect tan and it will last longer.

Final thoughts
In my opinion, these tanning waters aren’t the most effective self-tanning products and don’t produce the best results, but there are reasons why someone else may like them. Now that you know how to use these self-tanners, you can pull off a natural, glowy tan while caring for your skin at the same time.
