Is Jergens self-tanner safe?
Despite any uncertainty or worry, Jergens self-tanner is safe to use on the skin and won’t cause any problems. There are ingredients in the Jergens self-tanners which are safe for use on the skin and are also heavily present in many other self-tanners too.
Firstly, all of these products are safe for all skin types, including sensitive skin, but we’ll get onto that later. Just like most other tanning products, the ingredients in these ones are pretty standard for a self-tanner, and there isn’t anything which really makes it stand out.
Although the ingredient lists may seem very long, and perhaps some of the ingredients listed may look intimidating or unnatural, all of them are extremely safe to use. You may even recognise some of them from other products or ingredient lists!
You will notice that the mousse has fragrance mixed into the formula, which is what cancels out the awful fake tan scent. Most of the time, it’s a good idea to avoid fragrance in products for the face, as it can be irritating, but it should be okay for the body. The face self-tanner doesn’t include any fragrance.

As mentioned earlier, these products are sadly tested on animals, which is something you may not like if you are very interested in ethics or you simply don’t want to encourage animal testing. This is something important to keep in mind.
Can I use it if I have sensitive skin?
If you have sensitive skin, you may struggle to find a self-tanner that caters for your needs, especially for your face, where the skin is even more sensitive. Thankfully, most people say that Jergens Natural Glow Oil-free SPF 20 Face Moisturizer is suitable for sensitive skin.
This product is an everyday moisturiser with a broad-spectrum SPF built-in too, so it should have adequate sun protection during the winter months. If using in the summer, you may want to use a separate sunscreen too, for extra protection.
Even with frequent, everyday use, you’ll find that this self-tanner is not irritating for the face, however, you should probably avoid getting it in your eyes as this will still sting.
Does it clog pores?
In beauty and cosmetics, the word non-comedogenic is a fancier way of saying a product doesn’t clog pores. Products which are non-comedogenic don’t specifically guarantee this – it’s just a claim – but that’s the general rule.
You don’t want to have a self-tanner which clogs your pores as this can cause blackheads, whiteheads, and other skin concerns. If your skin is oily, you want to look out for non-comedogenic products especially, as this is a problem which most with oily skin face.

When purchasing a self-tanner for your face, one which is non-comedogenic is very important as this is where you will notice blackheads and the products settling into your pores the most.
Does it smell?
Most self-tanners have a typical smell which comes from the reaction between your skin and the active ingredient responsible for pigmentation: dihydroxyacetone (DHA). Unfortunately, it’s hard to diminish this smell in a product as it’s so strong, and you also can’t smell it until the product has come into contact with your skin.
In terms of the face self-tanner, people find it doesn’t have a terribly strong or unbearable scent. Although it’s not scented, this product is a gradual self-tanner and only contains a small amount of tanning agent, which is probably why the smell isn’t too bad.
